Guess it's time for a Morel mushroom story. In the early 90's we heard rreports that they were finding Morel's buy the truck load at Yellowstone Park. This was the year after the big fires. We made a couple of phone calls, and confirmed the story. Myself and my buddy laid off work and headed West. We drove all night and got to Yellowstone about 7 in the morning.
Drove into where the fires were, and there were dozens of reefer trucks lined up, and the hills were alive with Orientals with baskets picking mushrooms. They were picking them, selling them to the guys in the trucks, and they were driving them to Denver, were there was a buyer. He was then putting them on a plane and there were on there way overseas. There was an article in the Denver paper that he was selling them for over $100 a pound.
Anyway we got our potato sacks out and started picking, (it was just picking, no lookin). They were in clumps the size of basketballs. Same size mushrooms as the ones here, but just huge clumps. There were clumps of mushrooms as far as you could see, and on every hill that the fire had touched. It took us 6 hours to completely FILL the back of a Jeep Cherokee. We ruined a lot of them because they got squashed from the weight. I've been tring to find the pictures, but I think my ex wife must have them. It was a trip I'll never forget.
