The Wooly Grunge
I said I would do a western brown trout fly on a jig. I call it the wooly grunge. This is not my pattern, it was taught to me in the 50's. It is the best brown trout pattern I have ever used. It has a black chenille back and burnt orange chenille belly and then palmer wrapped hackle. In those days we did not know how to bullet proof a hackle and you went through a lot of flies. Now we know how to bullet proof the hackle and the flies will last a long long time before the hackle is worn out. I am going to try it on crappie. The head is done rough on purpose and it is done by over heating the Powder Paint until it turns that way.

What do you mean by "bullet proof the hackle"?
-
fly robs got some nice patterns were tying for trout here in WV...Got 5 combos that will be nice and catch trout ..AND ROB HUSH!!!!!!!!!!!!! lol

Bullet proof may be a western thing. When you palmer a hackle which is to wrap the hackle around the hook from back to front the fish that have teeth will cut through the hackle and it will come unwrapped ruining the fly. So to correct the problem you make a dubbing loop on the back of the fly and put the hackle inside the dubbing loop and spin it inside the loop and what you have is a hackle that is totally wrapped in thread then you palmer it. Now when the hackle get cut it will not come unwrapped. Hope this helps.

Yes, That answers all my questions. I've done that with peacock herl, but never a hackle feather. I'll give it a try!

Your right, I forgot about peacock. I do not see peacock used on jigs and I am going to get some on order and try it.

there's lots of fly patterns that can be tied on jig heads, just remember when you tie them put the jig in the vise with the hook up.
