Anybody use an underspin reel with 4 lb. line? If you do what model do you use?
I tried them and went back to a regular spinning reel. Whichever one you choose, check the method in which the line is retained for the cast. Some use a pin that is released when the trigger is released, more preferable, and others use pressure between the front housing and the spinning portion underneath, which causes flat spots and weakens the line. Some of these have rubber on top of the internal part to ease the flat spotting of the line, but as the reel ages this hardens and you're back to square one.
I have some of the Zebco 11's. Not a decent drag to them at all.:( I'd go with small spinning reels if I had it to do over again.:o
Tried a little Zebco, worked fine as a line holder, not so much as a reel. Go with a little spinner.

I 've got 3 or 4 Shakespeare underspins, 1 Pfeugler,an old Zebco UL 44 and a Zebco Gold 33 triggerspin. They are all good for holding line and really not much else. The Zebco 33 triggerspin will work but it is pretty heavy so usually stays in the closet. Usually, when it's time to reel in, I just pull in the line like I'm fly fishing, almost second nature. Any how, the results the same, fish in the bateau..Enjoy your time out there...Bayoucrappie
Guys thanks for the education. I guess my next question is, is there a good spincast reel for 4 lb. line? Let me know as I am needing one.
Two points:
1. I don't use underspins but, if I did, I'd get a Daiwa.
2. As the other guys have already mentioned, they're are better reels out there. Almost any spinning reel would do a better job.

Thanks, I did not know where to post it. You are right about the old Johnson. I had already pulled up the listings. There was a time when the Johnson Century was mounted on a fly rod and used for jig fishing. Too bad it was discontinued.
Garcia Avocet at wally, 'bout $20, Diawa Sweepfire at Sportsmans Warehouse, 'bout $11(I have 4), Wally Marshall spinning reel at BPS a while back, $14, The list goes on. Ball bearings are cool, but un-necessary for this task and pricey. 2000 series reels have a bigger spool that gives bigger loops to the line memory, bigger drag that works smoother and generally last a bit longer than the low price tiny reels.Quote:
