Dollar Tree Dollar Store Jig Tying Materials......
I've tied some flashy jigs with mylar strips, gift bag shredding, from the Dollar Tree. The mylar shredding comes in silver, gold, red, green and blue. The brand name is "Voila" and you will find it near the gift bags. If it's not there, they are temporarily out and check back later. Probably enough in a bag to tie several hundred jigs. I tie on 1/16 ounce red headed jigs with a number 6 hook and cut the strands at angles just aft of the hook. So far, the silver jigs with the single red stripe down each side have caught 21 species.
Another material is a fine translucent filament material found in "Hair Extensions" for little girls in the toy section. The fibers are two feet in length and comes in 6 or more colors. I bundled mine in 8 inch bundles using electrical cord ties. It comes in beige, brown, chartreuse, hot pink, green and a vivid blue, to name a few. It's like fish hair, only I think much finer.
If they have the round hairbrushes, check to see how the bristles are installed. If it looks like a little bit of the end is doubled back, making a "hook" that's jammed into the hole, that's the one to get. With the little tear shaped round end on the bristle, they make great "eyes" that can be trimmed to just stick out of the tying materials.....great for craw eyes on bass jigs, but can be used on others also. Just use pliars to remove from the handle.
Just in.....News Flash........500 holographic icicles each being 19 inches, great flash material emulating fish scales in effect in both silver and gold.....just in. I think this is just a tad thinner than the gift bag shredding meaning width-wise. Does seem a tad more supple than the shredding as well. Great stuff...
The nail files that come 4 to a pack with the diamond dust blades and plastic handles make good hook sharpeners.....
