Engine swap question

Just got me a new (actually used) crappie rig; 2002 SeaArk ZXL 170. It is powered by 2001 Johnson 2 stroke 50 hp that obviously floods which is prompting me to consider a 4 stroke EFI replacement (good used motor). I've been looking at the 50 Merc EFI 4 stroke and either the 50 or 60 Yamaha EFI (they both weigh the same). Boat is rated (manuf plate) for 50-75 hp.

Numbers I found for weights are 212 (with T&T) on the Johnson, 248 for the Merc and 237 for the Yamaha (both 50 & 60). So here's the question;

Is the extra weight of a 4 stroke setting up an unsafe condition? I could re-locate the trolling battery forward (right now, its behind the driver's seat) for better weight distribution.

Opinions please.

The differences are miniscule. You have bigger variances in weight when you ride alone or with one or two passengers. Go for the 4 stroke and don't think twice. Good Luck w/ your new boat.

that is true...if I had it to where I could get whatever I wanted...I would go four stroke four sure! Yeah...they are a bit slower...but the fuel milage and quiet operation is by far superior. I would go 75hp if your boat is rated for it though. Always try to max out if possible. Better to have the extra power and not need it..than need it and not have it. Just my opinion. Good luck!!

Thanks gentlemen; I was hoping my opinion would match with more experienced "power boat" owners. This is my first "powered" craft; I usually use paddle or oars - canoe and whitewater drift boat for trout fishing.

Any ideas on where to find a good used 4 stroke EFI motor (I'm in Huntsville)? I'm watching Craigslist and "FleeceBay" right now. Dang, "FleeceBay" sellers want almost new prices for motors.

I bought mine from BPS,they had some year end left over motors they were discounting.Mine was actually a 2 year leftover,new in crate and came with a full warrenty.Im am near the store in atlanta and they found it in savannah and had it transferred.

Put a 4 stroke on it....the extra weight will not hurt a thing. My 115 4 stroke Yamaha only weighs 78 lbs. more than a 115 2 stroke. Be sure and get one with EFI on it....they start good and run smooth.

you could also check area marine dealers, they may have some "new" leftovers from prior years that might fit your needs/wants.

telli take a look at outboardsales.com there prices on new motors are as good as used prices I have seen
shipping might kill ya but it's worth a look.

Just checked outboardsales.com and WOW! Those prices are better than a lot of used motors out there. And Cookeville isn't too far up the road; I could go and pick one up, thus saving shipping costs. And with doubtful sales tax for an out of state sale, I'd be doing good.
