Ok Guys, As long as I have been fishing for specks I have always used minnows and jigs and done vertical jigging over structure. I have never tried to troll for them and do not know the ins and outs. Like how fast or if you have to weight the jigs and spinners. Just looking for a basic idea and some pointers. I dont want anybodies secrets. :D I want to try trolling this year in Monroe and Jessup. Thanks.
Trolling speeds are generally between .7 and 1.2 mph (gps speeds) so you'll need a troller and gps that'll work for longlining. You'll also want rod holders set up within easy reach for longlining...atleast 8 for 8 rods. Most people that I know of use curly tail grubs on different sized jig heads and/or pony heads. I recommend lite wire hooks as you'll be hanging up ALOT and this will save you some money. As far as the depths the jigs run will be determined by speed, jig size, amount of line out of the reel, height you have your rods from the water, line size, etc., etc. You'll learn alot on your own once you have your boat and equipment set up for longlinging. IMO, everybody has their own setups which makes a difference in how the jigs preforms between boats. People can tell ya alot of info but you'll learn the most by simply getting out there and pulling the jigs yourself. Once youre set up and have more specific questions bring 'em back to the forum and I'm sure you'll get the answers youre looking for.;):)
chasintail trolling with jigs is a fun way to crappie fish and you can catch some nice slabs this way and cover a lot of water this way. all you need to do is know your water dep let your line out to the right dep that the fish are holding at and remember a crappie will go up after your bait but he will not go down after it to find the dep your jigs run just let your line out say 30 or 40 ft of line in 20 ft of water and pull your jigs to the shallow water watching your fish finder see what dep the jig starts to drag the bottom at try it with deferent jig weights and amounts of line out you can also add a split shot to get down to dep you want good luck and have fun
