Long line trolling with HH or jigs?

I put this on the main forum too as I know some just read it and their own state forum so forgive me for double posting. I may be making this more complicated than it is but have only tried it a couple of times for a short while with very limited success. I think I know what to do CB pulling and spider-rigging I'm a completely lost with long lining. Any one want to put some info out or show me where to go for some on line? From tackle to methods. I did a search for long lining but there was just so many posts that didn't have anything to do with methods, tackle etc.

Steve, I've done ALOT of reading on this and have tried it a couple times with limited success. All I can find out is you make a good long cast and ease around at from 0.7 to 1.0 MPH. Jig weights determine the depth you run. In a nut shell thats the general idea. TOW will help you determine how deep you actually run. Find a flat on your lake and toss out some jigs, then see what you hit bottm

I have been thinking about trying this also. I tried in once in the summer but did not really give it a chance. Seems like you move faster than spider rigging and use some stroll'r or curly tail jigs. I hope to try it again soon to see how it goes.

It just seems like it would be a great way to explore new water fast that would maybe not be suited to pulling CB's. Scott and I tried it a little in Kemper and may have gave it up too quickly but Kemper being a lot of open water with very little on the bottom it just seemed best to pull CB's. Seems like at the Rez with all that wood where neither one of us knows anything about looks like it may be a good way to find some fish.

It is a great place to try it and you do cover alot of water. I did it last year up at 43 and after watching Bo and Brad limit out, I just had to try it. I don;t have the setup for it though. You need one of them there auto pilot or co pilot things to do it right. Just a straight Tm won;t work to well unless you want to take turns catching and running the TM. Just my opinions on it but I really have only read alot about it and only tried it like 3 times

Here is what works for me. I am not saying that this is how it is supposed to be done but, it will under the right circumstances, catch a bunch of crappie.

EQUIPMENT--I use two BnM 7' Sam Heaton poles with Shimano Sedona 500 reels. Reels are spolled with 6# test line. Boat has two rod holders mounted on each
side in the front and rear.

Bait/Lures-- I usually start out with one rigged with a curly tail grub or other lure of choice and the other rigged with a gold eel abdereen hook. On the one with the
hook I will put a split shot about 12 to 18 inches above the hook. The size of split shot is determined by the depth of water I am fishing. I usually start
with a pss-3 or pss-5. I put a minnow on this rig and usually will put a crappie nibble on the grub.

Method-- I begin moving the boat slowly forward with the trolling motor and then I make a long cast. Put that rod in the rod holder and make the initial cast with the
other rod. I then pick up and hold both rods, moving slowly forward.

I organize the boat so that I can get to the minnows and the grubs without moving out of my seat.

If I have someone that wants to troll out of the back seat I will switch my front poles to Sam Heaton 11' footers. You really have to be careful here because of the possibility of tangles.

Keep your eye on the locator as much as possible. lf you go across some brush just raise your rod tips up to clear the brush.

Thanks a lot, the kind of info I'm looking for plus thanks to the other replies too. So you hold your poles and only use 2, I'm guessing you need a limber tipped pole, I don't have a Sam Heaton pole.

We use 4 9' BnM Roger Gant out the back of the boat and 12' BnM C&C or 12' BnM Crappie Wizard and 9' Roger gant in the front of the boat.
6lb. Vicious Hi-Vis. line.
Speed and Jig size determine the depth.
Bobby Garland Stroll R's jigs 100% of the time.
Like DD said TOW is the how to learn it.

I think that a limber tip will give you a little more sensitivity. You can certainly use different equipment. One thing that will help you feel the strike is to lace the line between your index and middle finger.
