Stake Beds

I plan on doing some stake beds out of bamboo....This will be my first doing stake beds...How much height is a good line for a stake bed?...So if you have 10ft water...Would you want the stake bed around 4-5ft once in the bottom of the lake?....Also, how many stake beds do you put in one area?...I read where one guy puts at least 50-100 bamboo stakes in one area...

A good rule is 1/2 the water depth max on height for me. Most of mine are 2 to 3' in 5 to 10' water depth. Size depends on the lake you fish and how you like to fish. I pefer an area covered about the size of my 16' boat. I usually put several beds spaced about 100' apart and move spot to spot with my trolling motor. I may fish 30 or 40 beds on a slow day.

Nimrod, how hard is it to drive the stakes? I've seen a couple videos, and they made it look way easier than I imagine it really is. Also, how long does it take you to make one bed? Do you build out of a flat bottom boat?

I have the blueprints to make a good stake driver out of pvc...It is simple to make and you can drive into any depth...As long as whatever driving is long enough..

I've seen the blueprints for the stake drivers before. I was just wondering how hard it is to actually build them. I know it takes quite a bit of work to make 'boo buckets.

How hard it is to build the stake driver or actually driving the stakes into the bottom of the lake?....I haven't actually used it yet..But, I watched a video on how to do it...Looks rather simple...But, will take time to drive a lot of them...The stake drive is simple to build..I will be using the stake driver this next Thurs. for the first time...I will let you know how it goes...

Here most of the bottom is soft and with the lake down ,we just push them in. If it hits a hard pan we hit them with a big hammer. Have seen some put in water out of a boat with a driver. I made one out of steel pipe but that is hard work. Much easier with lake drawndown. When lake is full I perfer sinking pallet stakebeds. I still put pallets down with stakes most of the time during the drawdown as we have mostly mud bottom. The fish seem to like a hard bottom of pallets.
