Try testing it on another Humminbird transducer to see whether the problem is in the transducer or head unit, than contact the Humminbird Customer Resource folks to setup getting it fixed. This does not have to be another 385ci as most Humminbird units use the same 200kHz 2D sonar in their transducers. If you cannot find another Humminbird transducer to test yours with just call them anyway at 1-800-633-1468 and see if they will ship you a transducer to test with.

Gregg: Bad Transducer. Is it rare to have a problem with HB transducers?
Not sure what “rare” is but getting a new transducer that does not work is not unheard of. Although there are not many components inside of a transducer and these are typically potted in an epoxy; they can still fail. Sometimes this is due to handling and sometimes something inside just fails. We of course test each one after they are made but they can still go bad afterwards. There are ceramic elements inside of these so a little care must be taken to not drop them on a hard surface as we have seen them fail due to this.
I've called Humminbird and they are sending a replacement. It worked fine the first time out and hasn't worked since. Unit has never seen a hard surface so that can be ruled out. Hope the new one fixes the problem.
