I was just wondering what ya'll think the best way to go after crappie in this terrible heat we have been haveing lately. I would think that the crappie would be more lethargic during the heat wave and you should make a slow presentation. Saying that I would venture to say that tight line drift fishing would produce more than long lining because of the slow presentation. Ya'll please post what and why you think is the most productive way.
Rusty, I've been catching fish all summer longlining 1/16th jigs with an added splitshot on the lines. Even with the water temps in the low 90's I've trolled as shallow as in 7' of water and still caught 'em. Lots and lots of little fish being caught but atleast they have been biting. The days I fished I was there at daylight and fished until it got hot which was usually 9-10AM. I tried minnows once after trolling jiogs. Caught 'em on jigs, didnt on minnows.With the lake surface water around 83* now I'm picking up a few more larger fish in the 14"-15" range and a good mess of keepers 9" and larger.
I can't honestly say since I have wimped out during this summer heat. I will be pulling cranks again the next chance I get on Blackshear. Those MS guys have been putting a hurting on those white crappie all summer long. Trolling at 1.5 - 2.0 mph is pretty fast. I would say if you can find the crappie hanging with the shad they will be just as active. I would think the way you normally drift tight lining minnows along the channel would be a good method and like gabowman said trolling can still work. If you can catch an overcast morning, I would definitely think trolling 1/16ths along the channel would produce. Good luck. Let us know what did and didn't work. I will be calling you as soon as I know I may head down. What do you think the evening dock light bite is doing????
Hey guys thanks for the info. If I can get the chance I think I'll try some long lining Thursday or Friday. I think I'll try double jigs on each rod. Last week when I fished the channel it showed alot of fish hanging on the channel ledges in deep water. Also there was a large may fly hatch out. SHine, I have not heard how the dock shooting is but I'm gonna try it also.
