Two Lures Too Add Two Your Arsenal/Lake Conway/8-23-10

Launched the boat at 6:30 AM, lake was glass calm, with silver spatters of shad jumping everywhere, Cypress trees standing up like fast food restuarant's. I decided to fish with something a lil different than my standard goto tube baits and try a couple of baits I have had some good success with jigging Lilly pads on Gold Creek in the fall. As I pulled up to my first tree I flipped a pearltruce PanFish Assassin Tiny Shad next to the tree and let it sink to just off the bottom, after holding the bait still A few seconds and no bite, I started to slowly horizontally move the bait from the tree and WHAM I felt the thump. As the morning progressed I noticed this was the key to get em to hit the bait. As the heat of the day approached I switched to another bait that I like, the Bobby Garland Slab Slayer. I finished up my limit with this bait and caught my four nicest crappie of the day between 12-1PM. If you don't already have these two baits in your arsenal and you like fishing lillypads or Cypress trees, Give these two baits a try. They are indeed fish catchers.;)

nice haul and yep I like those baits too but not tried jigging cypress yet.....what are you looking for or finding are the more productive trees? On channel drops, on deep flats, are they live cypress with shade under them or just old standing timber? We got a ton on a local lake but I am not sure which way to attack it yet.....congrats again.

Yes live cypress trees in Five to seven feet of water on flats, I like the clusters of live trees best and the wide base single trees with a wide width of limbs putting allot of shade on the water. For me pitching the jig at the base and letting it pendalem back to the boat. Or letting it sink next to the base and just off the bottom then horizontal move ment with my rod tip away from the tree in the shade is when i most often get nailed. If you have some big log lay downs i have been catching some there too. If I catch some in a area of trees, i can often go back to the same trees later in the day and catch more quality fish off the same trees. LOL it's like as the shade moves around the tree from the movement of the sun, the crappie follow it as the day goes along. Hope this helps.:)

Russ, that's a nice mess of fish you got there!:D While you were doing that, I spent 7 1/2 hours riding a 72* wide Bad Boy lawnmower yesterday!:( I'd whole lot rather been on the water catching some of those slabs. Way to go, and thanks for the post and the pics.:) By the way, did you get the pic of the brown trout from Saturday?

Yes it does. Thanks. Is your lake/river you are fishing relatively shallow? Most of our cypress with alot of shade are shallower than the ones you are fishing. Do have some standing old timber with that type depth but seem to be single tree trunks and not a lot of branches under water. Guessing the crappie will still draw to the tiny bit of shade those single trees put off? Thanks again.

Better try some Umbrella tubes buddy. That's all I use on Nimrod. Hope to hit Peckerwood real soon , them slabs kill em over there. Looks like your doing good in this heat .:cool::D

caught a limit at peckerwood saturday (30) all good fish the bite was best from 11am to130pm. going again thursday morning.

Yes Lake conway is a shallow water lowland Res, avg depth is about 6-7 feet with some deep water lakes/ponds that were there when they filled the lake in in the 50's. There is live Cypress scattered all over. This time of year, My best guess would be for you to fish the trees on your lake that are in at least 5 feet of water or more. As Sept rolls in and the wtaer cools try the shallower trees. I fish deadwood trees if they are on the way to my next live or cluster of Live Cypress trees and they do, pay off every now and then but I concentrate on the live ones the most.
