Onboard charger question
I have an onboard charger that I bought from bps. Its the one that is 5/5/5. Anyway, after a fishing trip, say a saturday and you use up all your batteries and you come home and by sunday sometime you have the go fish displayed saying your charged up. Should you leave hooked up till you go again? I mean do you get a trickle charge by leaving hooked up, or should you unplug. I have noticed if you unplug by next weekend when its time to go again, my charger will go back to charging again but only after a disconnect. What you think?

Yes, I have a Pro-Mariner Pro-Mite on mine and if it's not on the water it's plugged in. They have a built in trickle that will cut on and off as needed.

mine stays hooked up till I back up to my boat.........the green lights means its ready.......it shuts automatically... if it aint green( fully charged) I know theres a problem - bad or loose connection, blown charger fuse, bad battery etc.....

Thanks guys. :) It will stay hooked up till I go.

If you leave it plugged up all the time be sure to keep a close eye on the water level in your batteries. Leaving it plugged up will cause the water to evaporate alot quicker. I have the same charger and when i get home I put a full charge on my batteries then I unplug it. I usually fish at least 1 or 2 times a week. I also plug my charger in the night before I go as well.

The new "smart" chargers will not cause your water to evaporate unless the charger or the battery is defective. Once the charger goes into stage 3 it only charges the battery when required or on demand. It doesn't keep charging if not needed. Its a great feature that keeps your batteries fully charged even in the coldest weather. Plug it in and forget it until time to go fishing again. But don't forget to unplug when you go and drag the extension cord down the road. Don't ask how I know. I couldn't figure out why all those people were honking at me. LOL

I made a short ext. cord . Mine is only 4ft long if you forget to unplug it just pulls off the charger end and lays against the wall
