That is a hard one to diagnose without being there. You might check to be sure you have a strong spark at all plugs. Is the motor idling fast enough? Should be around 800 RPM with the motor in the water and in gear. Also you could try running some Sea Foam thru it.
I have a 1968 model 25 horse Evenrude. It set for about 10 years in the garage. I put it back on the jon boat last Summer. It fired right up when I turned it over. It ran fine in a barrel but when I put it on the boat and took it to the lake it had very little power. After a few trips it gained power but idled really rough and spit and skipped. I figured it needed a good carb cleaning but the next time I put it in the barrel to test run it it stopped running all together. After a close look see the key way that hold the fly wheel on had sheered. I guess I should have listened to the sticker that said to not crank in gear.
So I put a new key in and it fired right up and had more power and ran some better. It ran good enough to haul me to and from my fishing spots. I finally bought a can of Sea Foam and mixed 3 ounces to a gallon or gas. After the first trip I noticed a huge difference in the motor. It fires right up, idles smooth and does not spit and skip anymore. It is a 1968 model motor so it is not perfect but it runs good and I can't complain.
I will continue to run Sea Foam now at the recommended amount. Hopefully it has another 10 years in in.
I woudl suggest running some Sea Foam in it and then let the gas stay in the carb between trips. I think you will notice a drastic improvement.

Seems odd that it only does that in reverse...leads me to think lower may be binding or sunthng in reverse...any odd snds in reverse? put on muffs and listen for odd snds. Also make certain ur linkages r adjusted properly. As said rnd 800 in gear. Lower the better. Nvr evr 1000 or above. Way bad on lower. Check throttle lobes r opening as they shud when u r in revese. Also try trimming engine up if u have pwr t and t. If its to low engine has trouble clearing out exhaust and can stumble a load up. Also when idlng trim up. By all means run sea foam if u haven't. Those engines r bad to coke up or. Get a lot of carbon in them. Do. Decarb if u haven't. Just sum thngs to check easily. Need more description of symtoms. I hate typing on qifes blackberry. I stink at it. Lol
