Installing 898c si....

Well I just got my new 898c si in the mail yesterday and plan to install it this weekend. I had a couple questions for some of you that might have done this in the past.

Where did you mount your external GPS reciever? Did you mount it directly to the boat or did you place in on some sort of rod or pole so it could get a better reading?

I already have a depth finder transducer on the starboard side... would it mess anything up if I put the si depth finder on the same side or should I put it on the port side? I read somewhere that the motor turning clockwise causes more turbulance to one side than the other so that is why I am curious. I am sure I am over thinking this...

Anybody got a G3 boat they have installed a depth finder on? Just curious how you ran the wires. I want to run the wires of my old depth finder to the front of the boat and the new depth finder to the console. I am just not sure where those wire channels go... esp to the front of the boat.

I just installed my 898 yesterday
on aluminum boat
trans has to be on right side of boat
and be able to see it standing from each side
with no obstruction your old trans wil probly block one side of imaging

For the best possible accuracy from your GPS (this goes for all brands) you want to mount the GPS Receiver where it will have an unobstructed view of the sky (blocking any satellite signal could lessen the position accuracy). To get the most accurate waypoint coordinates from objects seen on the sonar you need to mount the GPS Receiver as close to the transducer as possible. So the best location and installation would be back on the transom above the Si transducer but also on a pole or mast that places the GPS Receiver above the level of the motor. Most though just go ahead and mount the GPS Receiver on the gunwale or top of the transom as the pole gets in the way when fishing.

I second what Cane pole said. I don't have an SI unit, but am salivating over one like Pavlov's dog. I would love to get an 898. Let us know how you like it once you get on the water.

I would love to get one for my console and then move my 787C2i to the bow and link them together. Only a good plan for now.

Well I got it on the boat last weekend and tested it out yesterday. It all worked great. I still have a lot of learning to do on the system but I think it is going to be a major improvement. The 1 foot contours from the navonics card is really awesome also. I caught about 7 catfish and 3 crappie in the hour and half I was out trolling. Mainly just playing with the depth finder. Darn catfish would not quite hitting long enough for me to learn the system.. ha

I went with this unit and love it. Get the ram mounts and adjust the screen so it points right at ya eyeballs. Also, record everything when you first start using it and compare what you see on screen with humviewer. It'll train you to notice those little blobs of fish out there on the sides of your boat.

Its easy to see the fish below you in the water column, but it takes a while to notice them on the sides while dealing with all the other issues of fishing. But in time, you'll see a splotch and recognize it for a school of fish, motor around a catch a couple.... at least I have.

They aint lyin. These side units will change the way you fish. I catch where they ain't sposed to be and don't see any where they are.

This is how I did mine. The pics are a little blurry but you get the idea. Put it back by the transducer and dosen't get in the way. Just have to remind the wife not to step on it.

Are U running the 898 alone or do U have another locator on the consol?

I just put a 998 on my rig and I mounted the transducer on the left side of the outboard because I have an existing FF and figured a back up would be smart just in case I took it out today and it seemed to do well ID a lot of structure and marked a lot of fish caught 2 cats trolling in the river by the house. I put a troll-o-matic on the outboard and it works great but it seems to send turbulance and make the SI on the left side show a little fuzzy if I turn sharp to the left and every once in a blue moon if I take off and plane out it will give me an alarm and say I'm in 1 FOW and then go to 75 to 80 FOW when I was only in 24 fow. I think it's alright but if you guys know of something I could change or adjust let me know works great at 30 mph as well as .7 MPH except for the once in a blue moon and all I do is let off the throttle and let it catch up and take off again and it's fine sooo I don't know maybe normal this is the first DI and SI unit I've owned. Any advice or info would be greatly apprieciated.
