banks fishing in SE Virginia?

Hi folks. I've lived here in Hampton Roads for quite awhile and been thinking about getting into freshwater fishing. I've been reading up a bit, but most of the magazine articles and online stuff deal with fishing from a boat. I really don't want to mess with boats at this point, just want to keep things simple; rod, reel, tackle box, cooler. I'm in decent shape so I try to walk/hike as much as I can. The problem is, the closest waters appear to be boat-only; Harwoods Mill for example.

I've found a few references to good lakes and reservoirs in the area, but no info on which ones are suitable for banks fishing. Can you folks list out some of the better spots to attack?

Welcome to the forum. I'm drawing a blank when it comes to bank fishing but hopefully some others here can help you. I did take the kids to the ranger station on back bay many years ago, but I forget where it is. (age thing)

Newport News had a shore fishing place at Newport News park, and I think they have a pier at Harwood Mills, you might call Parks and Recreation for info. On the southside try West Neck Marina on West Neck Rd off Princess Anne Rd, my buddy used to take his kids there they caught some nice crappies and white perch from shore there in the fall.

Beaverdam Swamp Reservior in Gloucester has some nice areas for bank fishing if you don't mind driving that far.

I think there is bank fishing at the Lone Star lakes in Chucatuck. try this link for info.
