i went to a buddies house to shoot some guns and i guess one of his dogs got a hold of a couple of his guniea and killed him them and so i asked him if i could have some of the feathers and so he grabbed a bag and filled it up but my question is how do i clean the feathers to where they dont stink and stuff like that
myself i dont think they will stink if layed out to dry...if i was going to do anything id clip of the ends alittle...
you can put them in a bag and sprinkle some borax in with it.It will dry every thing up and stop any oders.Borax can be bought in most stores in the laundry soap area.
First things first, throw them in the freezer for 2 weeks! It will kill all the bugs that will be on them. The ones you don't see right now could wreak havoc on your whole feather collection if stored with them.
What I do is freeze feathers for 2 weeks, then lay them out somewhere where they can dry and air out. Sometimes I preen them so they look nice.
That's the nice way to get them. I had to do all the dirty work to get my rooster feathers but was well worth it for the amount I got.
When I turkey hunted we would keep some borax handy. It will kill anything living, we would put borax on the base of the tail feathers and pin the tail fanned out. Never had any trouble with bugs. Now I wish I had kept all those body feathers!

First if there's any blood on them you need to wash them in water soapy water and get the blood off. Dawn dish soap works great.
After you get done dry them and put them into a container with Borax and let them stay in it a week, if you see any wet spots put fresh borax on it.
I've done this to separate feathers and whole skins and I've never had a problem with them.
