Just trying some soft hackle collars and see what everyone thinks. Didn't pick the chenille for any reason other than it was sitting in front of me. Since it has green I thought this Orange Soft hackle may look good, so tell me what you think. Plus I am thinking about getting more colors of this soft hackle.

That jig will fish! I will bet that collar looks great underwater. I do like the color combo of the jig. Great work as always Skip.
Looks great. If you want the true soft hackle collar just pull the fibers back a bit so they lay a little more towards the body, it will flare out more when you fish it.

I am not sure I know what you mean Fatman. It's not tied in more back, just pulled the fibers back a little? If that is it will it not get that way any how when you keep them in a box? Maybe just fold the hackle a little? clear me up a little please.

It looks good Skip. With the orange soft hackle I'd fish that one at Dusk or Dawn. I catch a lot of crappie with orange early and late in the day.
Yeah they're pulled back more, and most of the ones I've had don't fold back being in a box

Fish will eat that! I had great luck about this time last year with the bluegills on a "soft hackle jig". 1/80-oz black head, brown marabou tail, brown chenille body with gold tinsel rib, and partridge collar. It's kinda fly snob-ish, but the gills ate it like candy!
Yeah ok I see and my flies look more like that, but I would have to leave a space between the head and the chenille as the chenille is what keeps it standing up like it is.Quote:

I like the way it stands straight out. Gives the look of gills. Can't go wrong with it in my opinion. I will have to tie some of those for salmon and steelhead as it covers a lot more bases in color on one jig.
You can sort of make the hackle lay back even with a short space, actually the short the better. If you pull the first wrap down tight to the body and then wrap the next and do the same you can get the hackle to be in layers and make a really big profile. It is not simple to do and takes some patience but can be done.
Looks great Skip! How do you use hackle pliars when tying? I've seen y'all mention them but I don't even know what they look like. (dumb me) LOL
