I have a 2008 Mercury 150 Optimax with less than a year left on warranty. Once the warranty expires, I'm thinking of disconnecting the oil injection system and mix the old fashioned way.
I had a bad experience with oil injection in the 90's and I realize the newr technology is "supposed" to be better.
What do y'all say?
Honestly, I've never heard of disconnecting the oil injection on an Optimax. I'm sure some have done it, but generally speaking, it's done on older motors such as EFIs and earlier versions like the XRis Evinrude XPs or Johnson GTs...motors of that vintage. I'm running oil injection on a 99 EFI right now. Probably ought to disconnect, but probably won't. If I were you, I wouldn't, but if you do, have somebody qualified to do it. No telling what you could mess up on that ECU if it's not done right.

My cousin works at a marine repair shop and he recommended me to mix mine on my 96 merc 150 oil injection. He owns a 2008 opti max 150 and he mixes his. I still run mine injected tho, havent had any problems, and its a TON easier for me to not have to measure it out... May come back to bite me tho.
I was wrong, my warranty is good through 2013. But, the question is still a good one.
What do y'all do when the warranty runs out on these newfangled 2 strokes.
The newer Optimax's DO NOT have the problems the earlier models had. If I had a 97 or older I would mix but the later models are ok on the oil injection systems.
Get good boat insurance. We hit a log with my buddy's yammie 300 v max, 1 week later we had a brand new lower unit, wayyyyy cheaper than outta pocket
