I'm looking for a little feedback on the advantages of Pulling Cranks. It seems to me that Pushing cranks would be just as effective at a fraction of the cost.
I tried to ask my little friend here, but he wasn't talking.

Looks to me like the same concept, just takes more weight to push at the same speed as pullin. Lots of guys have told me pushin is the preferred method for shallower water

Pushing -
Advantages:
Controlled depth
Tighter turns can be made with fewer tangles while turning.
Slower speeds means you can get away with it with a cable steered and or 5 speed TM. Easier to manage by yourself since you're on the front deck and everything is right there.
Precision while manuevering around obsticles.
If you get hung, it's possible to stop and try to get the bait back.
Disadvantages.
Slower speed = less action
Covers less water in the same amount of time - if you know exactly where the fish are, or if they're tight to a spot, this can become an advantage
Precision depth means that it's better over changing depth contours or in shallower water where controling your depth is more critical.
Baits are closer to the boat and some feel the proximity will spook the fish - out the back overcomes this to some degree - more so with planer boards.
A catfish or a striper on a short line in proximity to a tight spread spells disaster, but will teach you how to cuss better than any on line course you can imagine.....of course, a live seminar with Sat is still superior....but still.

Hmmm.. So if I spend a whole lot more money on pulling supplies, I will have the added advantage of getting all tangled up.:rolleyes: I'm starting to think some of you guys have bought stock in some of these tackle companies. Pullin' out da back:
Advantages
Stealth - moves the baits away from the boat.
Time - Can pull with the big motor so all day runs are easier
Speed - can more easily obtain fast speeds at 2mph or greater and cover more water.
Spreads - It's easier to get more distance between the baits from the back with longer rods (at the widest point on the boat) and can also use planer boards.
It's easier to guide a fish around and through other lines than at the front with shorter lengths.
Cover more water, find more fish
With weights, you loose more fish due to shorter line and the weight giving them a leverage to pull off.
Netting is a problem from the front, easier from the back.
Pulling cranks is an all weather deal. It's effective in all wave conditions as long as you can take the discomfort.
Disadvantages:
Wider sweeping turns are required.
It's really a two man job if you're running the big motor as wind and waves will put you in a tight turn while handling a fish or putting out poles etc, unless you have the Co-Pilot/Ipilot.
