Grenada Lake - Catfish...

Finaly made it down from AR down to MS to fish with my dad last week. Hit the water Thursday PM and Friday and Sat AM.

Thursday was a gar fest - we landed 9 and lost about as many. Couple small bass and 1 little crappie. BTW - we cleaned the gar and already ate some :D

Friday, only 1 gar, couple bass and I think 4 catfish. We got them in about 5 - 6 FOW.

Saturday - 1 keeper crappie and some more cats, again in about 5 - 6 FOW.

Bight was real slow all three days, others we talked to hadn't caught anything. We were fishing around the bridge at carver point, but didn't do well in the deper waters.

I haven't heard much about catfishing the lake, but now I'm planning a trip back to float some jugs and target some catfish.

Anybody got any info on catfish there? Any big blues or flatheads in the lake?

I was thinking about trying to net some shad for bait at the spillway - unless theres a better place to try.

Catfish? On Grenada? On Purpose?

It think your problem was your depth......I'd try a minimum of 10' on out to the 30s for Crappie. Catfish? I gots no idea, but we whoop a few in the 20' range pulling cranks. Shad are plentiful in the Spillway or Old River Run. In the Old River Run, you can pretty much get all you want with a throw net. Throw net works like a charm in the spillway too, but them rocks are rough on the net.

Lots of Blues and Flatheads in Grenada. Handgrabbers are having an off year, but I know of one 65# Flathead that came out his year.

We were fishing in and around the channel there to begin with upto 26 FOW , but other than the gar the bight was real slow. We were using minnows any where from just off the bottom to 6' deep when in the deeper water. I decided to move around a little and we drifted for a while, then on a whim I said since they weren't hitting deep , lets try shallow - and BAM catfish. We weren't just tearing them up , but better than the crappie. We tossed back a few small crappie that came out of 15' or so. A 3lb cat on an ultralight or crappie pole is a nice fight. Would have prefered some 2 lb crappie, but we had to make do. This was the first time I have been on the lake since I was a kid - we don't have a clue where to fish, just spending some time on the water with my dad. AND I'll confess, neither of us know much about patterning or locating crappie, especially in the summer. I'm sure we'll get after the crappie again, but we'll either need more pointers or catch them when they are easier to locate.
