In doing so do the batteries need to be identical? I have 2 different deep cycle batteries that im wanting to wire in series to last longer while using trolling motor but they have different cranking amps/amp hours. does this really matter?

If you have a 12 volt motor. You would want to PARALLEL the batteries not series.
Hooked in series the batteries would deliver 24 Volts to your 12 Volt motor. This would not be a good thing.
Series goes one negative lead to motor from battery # 1. Positive of battery #1 to negative of battery # 2. Then positive of battery # 2 to motor. 24 VOLT set -up
Parallel is batteries positve connected together and their negatives connected together. While not absolutely imperative that they be identical. For optimum performance and battery life they should be as close as possible. This set up would give you the 12 volts.
