How many of you guys crappie fish at night and if so do you have any luck? with the hot weather and all the summer time boat traffic I've been thinking about trying my luck at night fishing.Any feedback or pointers would be appreciated,thanks

We fish all the time at night & do quite well i,ve got a couple of green lites we just throw them over the side then fish on the other side. You are right about the boat traffic too. Just make sure that you got pleanty of light in the boat where you can see how to bait up and take off your fish.:DQuote:

Do you set your lights on the surface or sink them down to your fishing depth. I've always floated head lights on the surface but am seeing the green lights weighted down below the surface.

Also do you find full moon or no moon to be best?

night fishing is the way to in the summertime for crappie no jet skieers
I always just cover the lights say 6' to 1 foot deep remember crappie feed upward. It also seems like we do better when it,s not a full moon.Quote:

Where we fish the water is around 40 feet deep & we fish from 5 to 12 foot tightlineing minnows, Sometimes we catch them right under our lights but most times they,re in the shadows of our lights.Quote:

I like all the feedback,been leaning toward submersable lights.Should I get the green or white.Also I noticed that you used minnows,have you ever used jigs.
Summer time for me means a couple hours in the very early morning or night fishing and I absolutely love night fishing!
Use to bass fish at night too and started that probably in the very late 1960's, but all my nights now are for crappie fishing.
I use a jig on bottom (kind of heavy like 1/8 or even 1/4 Oz.) then up from that I tie on a Gamakatsu Drop Shot hook #1 or #2. Usually catch bigger fish on the jigs, but I do think crappie chasing and eating the minnows can spur some action form all of them.
I have used both green light and white and had good luck with all. I have a 3' long Fisherman's Green Light that I have had a used for a long time now, but I bought some of the LED Lights that are high intensity type (like $120 each) and I like them best as they are about indestructible and small and very light on battery draw.
I can tell you much about the low end green lights, but I know the white Q-Beam Starfire II lights work well, but have had a couple of them break for some reason or another. You could get one or two of these to find out how you like it.
On all of the lights don't take them out of the water when burning. Almost all these are for use under water and they all go down only like 1'.
