Anyone in Ashland

Howdy. New guy from eastern ky near ashland, in flatwoods actually. Is there anyone around that would be willing to show my where/how to fish for crappie in grayson/cave run/yatesville lake? I have fished yatesville lake alot 5-10 years ago, but after I got married I didn't have the time or the boat to go. Well the day my wife suggested we get a boat, well we went out and got a 98 fisher v17 tournament with a 60hp on the back. about all i used to fish for was gills and the occasional bass and am now wanting to concentrate on crappie.

Does Greenbo lake have any crappie in it? If it does, I was thinking about doing some pvc structures and hiding them...lol

So if anyone has an open back seat or wants to go out with me and show me the ropes, I would appreciate it.

welcome hobbz. You have some decent waters in cave run, yatesville and the ohio river to fish for crappies and your boat should be perfect for those places. Its about the time of year in our part of state to night fish so you should give that a try during the summer. Good luck.

I fished Cave Run for about the first 8-10yrs after it opened, but haven't been back more than a handful of times in the last 20yrs. Always fished it in the Spring spawning season, for Crappie ... and mostly at night during the Summer, for Bass (and most of that was during the first 8-10yrs, back when I was more into Bass fishing). If I were fishing it "nowadays" ... I'd probably fish it the same way I'd fish most any other lake, at this time of year. That would be one of two ways .... casting tube jigs to wood cover, on shaded banks, from daylight until the shade was gone from the cover ---- or fishing at night, tied up to a standing tree, with lantern light (or 12V elec lights), tightlining minnows at around 10-15ft deep in water depths of 18-30ft.

Can't help you on the other lakes, never fished them. :o

I'm located in eastern Kentucky too. Looking to catch crappie in any of the lakes listed above. I have a very small boat, but I'm always looking for a new fishing partner.

Hobbz, You have a nice boat that is more than adequate for any of the lakes in our area. I have a 17' Tracker that I have fished many larger lakes with. You just have to keep your eye on the weather and use good judgement. As far as the three lakes you mentioned you can go to the Kentucky Fish and Wildlife page at Kentucky Department of Fish & Wildlife Welcome, click onto the fish tab and click on places to fish. At the bottom of that page you will find waypoints for structure that has been placed in each of these lakes that will give you a place to start looking for fish. Cave Run has produced some really nice fish the past few years. Grayson has a lot of crappie but most lack size. I know some people say they catch some nice crappie at Yatesville but I have never done very good there myself.

Enjoy your boat. For me just getting out on the water is a big part of the fun of fishing! Hopefully your wife likes to fish. If not find an older man or a teenage boy to take with you and allow them to enjoy the outdoors. My old fishing partner passed about 4 years ago but we had some memorable times together.
