In the river I fish at (San Joaquin river) they are relatively common. They are usually small, around 4-5 inches but once in a while I catch a larger one at around 6-7 inches. They live in the same places as bluegill. They dont taste as good as bluegill and I consider them a nuisance.
and you are right about them.
They are good bait if you got some flatheads around.
They all think they're 5-lb largemouths though... Fun to catch, and very neat-looking!
Yeah I don't mind catching them at all... they will hit just about anything with their larger mouths. I've caught them on lures that were bigger than they were. I find they stay mostly closer to the shore and love rocks.

The green sunfish I catch look exatly like the picture but the colors are duller...i guess its because of water clarity; the river i fish at is muddy.
