I am thinking about buying a Minn Kota 55# Bow-Mount Edge trolling motor for my older 18' aluminum Lund. I don't do any trolling, just moving through standing timber and positioning the boat above cribs and sunken brush. This seems to be the most economical way to get the job done to me. The Edge is cheaper than the Maxxum, Power Drive, Terrova, etc. Does anyone think that I am making a mistake by going this route? Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.
for a little more you can go to a power drive V2 and add co-pilot or I-pilot to it later. can't do that to Edge
I use an Endura, which is a baby brother to the Edge. I think they have the same power plant (motor), and mount a bit differently. Mine is a transom mount, and hand controlled.
For my 14ish foot glass boat, its a bit too powerful. I would think the Edge will do a good job of pulling your boat around. The Maxxum is a step up, and has the digital maximizer available for it.
My Endura is a 5 speed, and none of the speeds seem to be just right for what I'm trying to do. I'd like it to go slower, or between the numbers.
The Edge does release from its mount easily, and I really like that feature. Pop it off and put it away if you have to keep your boat where sticky fingers might be tempted to lighten your load. If not, then no worries.
Given the choice between the Maxxum and the Edge, I'd really prefer to go with the Maxxum, mainly because of the mount. I use my trolling motor to move a good distance, and several of the lakes and rivers I fish are quite stumpy and have few if any boat lanes. I've broken a mount twice, but never hurt the motor itself.
The price is a bit more, but there have been a few good used ones for sale here on the swap shop area.
bought a maxxum 70 recon from grizzly, explained to me as an overstock, its a beast but i troll alot and my boats prolly heavier than you're lund, edge is a good one though my buddy's got a 50 on his 17ft tracker and it does great, if cost is a concern look for a "recon" saved me 100 bucks and still has 1 yr waranty
