Another hook size thread

Hey everyone, i was thinking of purchasing a Do-It Round Head Jig RHB-1060 mold. This will be my first attempt at anything like this. I have been doing some research but still have a few questions.

With this mold it takes the 570-575 hooks. I have used plain red hooks with minnows and really like the color. I will only be using soft plastics on them for crappies of course.

In regards to the hooks. Are regular Eagle claw hooks good enough or should i use a higher quality hook? What advantage would another hook have? Do the sickle hooks have an advantage?

I have thought about the Matzuo sickle hook too. It says they fit most 570/575 molds. Anyone know for sure if they would work in this Do-It mold?

Lastly, i can't judge the actual size of the hooks by the catalogs so i'm just taking a guess here. With the 1/16 & 1/8oz mold, would the size 1 and 2 hook be better, or the 2/0 & 3/0? Not sure which one to go with.

I'd get the red sickle hooks, or bronze if you don't have to have the red. They're like a needle, and a much bigger gap. Eagle Claws and Mustads suck unless you sharpen them.

#2 or 4 sickles for the 1/16th and #1, 2, or 4 for the 1/8th will be plenty...Too big and your plastics may not fit right.

Make sure you get good soft lead.

and where can you get lead? (cheap)?

1's, 2s and 4's should all work in that mold. For hooks I'd go to Capt Hooks and buy in bulk. Make a sheet and check all places and then go the cheapest.

You can get Mustads, Eagle Claws, VMC's or Matzuo's sickles. Why everyone bash's the Mustads and Eagle Claws I don't know been using them for 30+ years and haven't had a problem.

The only problem I've had with the Matzou's is sometimes the length of the wire (from the eye to the L bend of the shank) is a bit too long. I just set those ones aside and mail them back and ask for different ones.

Lead - go to a salvage yard and see what they have. I've got molds that I can pour down to 1/32 oz with tire weight lead and others only pure. If you can get pure lead cheap get it, old lead water pipe, roof sheathing etc. If you have a muzzle loader group in your area ask around where they buy lead at.

Not bashing ECs or Mustads, it's just a fact they're not as sharp as Matzuos, and sharp hooks = more fish hooked.
