I used a small split shot 12" above the hook for years until the drop shot. As small as you can cast. Sometimes the bite is on the fall and a big gill cant stand a slow falling bait!:) High vis line helps detect the falling bites. The drop shot is very effective around docks and structure as you can pitch it very accurately. It also sets the table for the fish a few inches off the bottom.
Hope that helps. Just experiment till you find what they want that day. It will change.
try this out, i think it works great when i bottom fish in creeks and deeper holes in the lake. Start tying on a carolina rig and after you tie on the leader, dont tie on the hook, instead slip on the smallest cork you can get from your local bait store. i use the little small ones that have a tooth pick through the center of them. then tie on your hook. the cork holds the bait up from the bottom while you fish. just make sure your weight is heavier than your cork or your hole rig will float up. i learned this setup from a catfisherman and tried it out and it worked well. I usually fish with a 12-15" leader and have the cork about 5 inches from hook. that puts the bait and hook about 3" of the bottom instead of in all the leaves and trash at the bottom of the lake.
Do you lose the feel of the bite? It seems like you would with all the terminal tackle between you and the hook. With the drop-shot you get the same off the bottom effect with a tight line. The feel you get with a drop-shot is very good and the fish usually wont swallow the hook before you know it.
Not trying to start anything, just curious.
I believe you are asking how to tie up a "drop shot rig"

you lose a little feel but not enough to make a big diff. when the fish hit it you can tell.
I will surly try that next time I am catfishing. I use a sinker slide, bumper, and swivel already(basically a Carolina rig), all I would be adding is the cork. That will help when they are off the bottom a little. Thanks
BTW for those that have not tried Team Catfish's sinker slides and bumpers, they are very effective.
