Anchors
What is the best weight and best kind of anchor for my 17' aluminum boat? Tracker 175 and motor is 40 hp. I have 2 ten pound mushroom anchors, but they won't hold my boat in place at Eufaula.
Any suggestions on what kind and how much weight?
Thanks,

LMAO Peke, there are times that an anchor from a Warship wouldn't hold you on Eufuala!
There is no one "best" anchor. There are different anchors for different types of bottoms. You just have to try and choose a type of anchor that will work on the bottom where you think you'll be using it most.
I have a 20ft All Welded Aluminum boat and use 20lb river anchors or danforth type anchors if I know there will rocks. I'm thinking about going to a larger river anchor because at times, it won't hold!
I'm not fond of mushroom type anchors. I've always had better luck with others. When using a mushroom or river anchor, you do need to use a length of chain. It helps the anchors grab hold. The rule of thumb that I've heard most is to use a length of chain that is half the length of your boat. So you chain requirement would be in the 8 or 9 foot range. Honestly, I've always used what I had laying around and never worried about the length that much. I'd say my average chain is probably 7 to 10 feet.
If you go this way, I'd get a coated chain unless you don't care about scuffing up your boat.
I don't use chains on the danforth type anchors, in fact, the latest ones I bought from BPS stated not to use a chain.

anchor
I know what a river anchor looks like. Maybe I should get a 20 lb one. I saw another anchor that looks like it opens when it is on the bottom. Then it digs in. Shoot, I can't explain what it looks like.
I thought when my husband and I put our fat butts in the boat we wouldn't need much of an anchor! :D

Peke, I was editing my post when you replied, so there may be something in my reply that you missed.
By the way, never assume a fat butt will hold a boat. I've disproved that theory many, many years ago!!!
Boat Anchor Comparisons
Here is the type I bought at BPS, but I haven't had a chance to use them yet.

OkieDon, that is the one I was trying to describe. The reviews don't sound good though.

Thanks,

Peke,
Try Richteranchors.com. They seem to only have dealers up north. Let me know if you find a dealer in our neck of the woods.

anchor
I bought the Chene anchor from Bass Pro. Added 4' of chain it does not work for me on Oologah or Eufaula lakes. I have a 17' boat and use 2 river 18# anchors w/ coated chain added. Wish could find a good quality winch, none I find on internet have good reports. Use 1/2" rope but may hands still give problems.

Thanks. Yes, I don't want to get the anchor so heavy that I can't lift it up. Hopefully there is something out there that is heavy enough to anchor the boat and still light enough that I can lift it.
