Lowrance x96 will not turn on

Let me preface this as I do not know anything about electrical things like this. It is probably an easy fix, but here goes.
I have a Lowrance x96 on the dash of my tracker. It stopped working last weekend on me. Would not turn on at all. It has the uni power plug/transducer all in one. I do not see any cuts in the wiring unless there is an issue inside the boat where teh wiring is hid. The power plug hooks into my fuse panel under the dash and then up to the unit. I thought I may have just had a unit go bad on me, so I got a replacement unit (exact same x96) and it would not turn on either. tried hooking up a backup unit i have to the fuse panel and it would not turn on. The rest of my switches for my livewell, lights, bilge etc all work and get power from this fuse panel. I then checked the fuse at the batter to make sure it was not bad and replaced it eventhough it appeared to be good. Nothing still.
Any ideas what the issue could be ?

Check the connection with a meter. Also look for signs of corrosion preventing a good connection.

Starting from the unit and working toward the battery, or starting from the battery and working toward the unit check each fuse to see if its blown and check the contacts on each fuse holder and connection as you go.

Using a test light, or a continuity tester or VOM meter, check for not only continuity, but also a ground at each ground location. Don't check on the connector at all BUT the fishfinder.

The reason for checking on the wire to to test the connector or screw/bolt each is connected to as well. Corrosion and be thin and allow voltage to pass, but very little amperage.

Finally, check the pins on the connector. If its the blue one, then the reading is done at the 12 and 2 o'clock positions. The 12 o'clock is the positive, and the 2 o'clock is ground. If you have the uni-style, the one with the big flat on one side, then the 12 and 3 are used... 12 being ground and 3 being positive.

Let us know what you find.

PS... clean every connection as you go and test for power after you reconnect each connection. This will tell you when you've found the problem.

Yep, get a meter and learn how to use it. Finding the problem won't be any less aggrivating, but it will at least confirm the point at which to get ticked off about the root cause of the problem.

To be dead ding dong sure you don't have a unit problem, you can remove the unit from the front, tote it to the back and plug it directly to the battery for a temporary installation (yes, use an inline fuse). This if you're an adamant "anti-meter" type guy. That way, you've narrowed it down to the plug, connector pins, the inline fuse, the battery or your temporary installation or a bad unit. But hey, you've eliminated the wiring run.

Get a meter. Learn to use it. :)

Where did you find a new x-96?
Mine is also dead. I get power to end of cable but unit will not turn on. I will re-read this thread and make sure I covered everything. I do not store my unit on the boat. I take it out every time I trailer the boat. I hope I don't have to buy new unit, but if I do it will not be lowrance.

Okay, I went out and cut the wiring back to the point of the cable from lowrance. I cleaned the holes in the plug with a needle and on the second try the unit came on.
I am re-doing my john boat so I will re-do the wiring.
I guess I have to wait now before buying one of the fancy new ones.:rolleyes:
Does it help to keep the unit plugged in all of the time? I have moved to a house where I feel a little more secure with leaving it on the boat.

I think it is best for them to be plugged up at all times. The more you take them loose,the prones stand's a chance of getting bend. If they get bend some,they will sometimes not let the unit turn on. I've had this problem before,specially with a Eagle Fishmark.
