Anybody know how to get the collar off of a starter pin? In the pic, it is the collar on the tip to the right of the spring. It will turn but I can't find a release to pop it off.
Reason: The starter works fine but while I'm running the pinion rides up and taps on the flywheel, I think I just need to stretch that spring a little to hold it down better. Thx

I wouldn't do that. Centrifugal force spins the starter drive into the flywheel. If it's hitting the flywheel while running I bet its something else.
You may be right, I just want to try this before I spend $ on a new starter or a rebuild. I talked to a guy today who does rebuilds and he seemed to think the spring was prolly the issue but said I would need a special tool (insert joke here) to get that collar off or bring it in to his shop and leave it for about a week. The motor is about 20 years old and I think this is the original starter so it makes sense that the spring is not very springy anymore, lol.
