You may be right, I just want to try this before I spend $ on a new starter or a rebuild. I talked to a guy today who does rebuilds and he seemed to think the spring was prolly the issue but said I would need a special tool (insert joke here) to get that collar off or bring it in to his shop and leave it for about a week. The motor is about 20 years old and I think this is the original starter so it makes sense that the spring is not very springy anymore, lol.
