well that would depend on what type of fishing you do or plan on doing, the size boat you have and your current battery setup.
My brother-in-law who is a fanatical crappie fisherman swears the only way to go is rack and pinion or cable steer especially if you do any dipping, easier to make corrections to keep you near the tree when the wind changes directions. Myself most of my experience has been on electric steer models and that is my preference but I have yet to use one to dip trees.
One thing I have heard way to many times to ignore though, get one that has infinitely adjustable speed settings. That way you can dial in the perfect speed for what you are doing. Some of the preset speed models will just not go slow enough.
If you post the type of boat you are using and style of fishing you will be doing I am sure we can get you headed the right direction.
terrova,Ipiolit,80 lb thrust, you will never regret it,
don't get one with a metal shaft, they bend. and don't get one that does not have a cable for steering, the electronic ones are too slow to turn... and get more pounds of thrust than you think you'll ever need, be glad you did later.
Right on Camo, I had a Minn Kota Power Drive on my boat when I bought it and they are to slow to turn, hit several trees in the wind with that piece of junk. Went to a Minn Kota Maxxum 80# thrust and Love it, it's a 24 volt setup but I have not been able to run the batteries down yet while fishing with it all day.
Depends on your style of fishin, dippin, shooting docks,brush/laydowns,spider rigging etc cable steer is the way to go because of the faster response the power drives/terrova are awesome to longline with and would also be awesome to spider rig with because of the hands free operation would allow you freedom in the boat.Just keep in mind its a costly decision and make your choice according to the way you prefer to fish, good luck.
Had a Minn Kota motor drive, hated it. Overran or too slow, constantly correcting. Only advantage was it had enough wire I could sit any place in the boat and run it, not an advantage if it won't go where you want it to. (And you can go wireless)
I sold it on Craig's List for more than I thought it was worth and bought a Motor Guide.
I'm happy. But that's me. You may want something different.

what size boat? I have a 16 ft grizzley and run a Minn Kota MAxx 70 which is more than enough for such a light boat. If you have a fiberglass bass boat or heavy deep v alum then I wouldn't go less than 80 lbs probably 100 lbs
