Think you can use any. not sure I bought theirs with the adapter. Good luck you will spend your first 4-5 trips just looking at what you didn't know was there.
You do not have to use the one we sell. You can get one much cheaper elsewhere or perhaps use one from your son’s junk drawer. The only thing I would watch out for is if you are using the higher capacity SDHC memory cards as they need to use a card reader that is SDHC compatible as well.
Thanks Greg, how many gigs should the card be?
I'm not speaking for Greg, but the Sandisk 4gb Extreme SDHC card was recommended to me.
It's personal preference,,
I've heard of people using up to the 16Gb cards with no problem..
My pc only has the SD reader format so I use the Sandisk Extreme III 2GB...which is the biggest Sandisk sells in the SD format...
I can get a lot of screenshots and recording time on a 2Gb card... I just keep several cards on the boat with me....
Remember to keep your recordings around 30 minutes or less to keep the transfer times to a reasonable level...it takes a long time to transfer a 1 hr recording to the pc ..and even longer to transfer it to a viewer program like Humviewer...
Rnvinc is right in that it is personal preference. He made a good point about the SD versus SDHC memory cards. If you do not have or do not want to get an SDHC card reader than you need to stick with a 2GB SD card at the most.
It also depends on what you are going to use the SD (or SDHC) card for. If all you want to do is update software and manage your waypoints than any speed and capacity SD card will work. If you are going to make lots of screen snapshots than I would use a SanDisk 1GB or 2GB Ultra II SD memory card. Going to be making a lot of Sonar Recordings? Than look to use the SanDisk Extreme III memory cards in at leas the 2GB (SD) or 4GB (SDHC) sizes.
I have an 898 on the way, I starte d hearing i need cards and cables..
what will I need? I got the card from the previuos post, what else,..]
also can this be mounted on the trolling motor.. I know you can send the transducer back that comes with it to get a trolling motor mount.. or at least you could on other models.. if it can i been reading about something to get to lower interference??
Thanks for any info
I found a 2 pak of 4GB cards for $25 @ WalMart!
jaxxman,
It all depends on what you want to do with your 898 unit and where you want to mount it. If you are going to run it on the bow you will need some way of mounting the transducer to the trolling motor. You can call the Humminbird Customer resource folks and arranges to swap out the standard transom transducer for the trolling motor mounted one (same transducer just different mounting hardware) or look at using some hardware from another company (Transducer Shield & Saver or Transducer Armor). Other than the memory card you should have all you need unless you are planning on InterLinking it to another Humminbird or using its video output or something like that.
JTMavs,
Let us know what brand those 4GB SDHC cards are and if they work in your Humminbird or not (not all brands will).
