Hello all you MO Crappie.com vets, its been a while since I've posted anything here due to "Blown Motor Depression Syndrom" I'm finally in the market to purchase another motor and I've seen quite few. My question is if you had a mechanic inspect a motor and it checks out ok how old of a motor would you feel comfortable buying. 80's, 90's, early 00. I'm looking to purchase between a 60 to 75 HP Mercury, what do you guys think? I'm hoping to have a little $ left over for nice toys for the boat.
Kazualobzerver would be your best bet (I think) in answering this question but I would not hesitate to contact Cabela's in KCK about this. VERY honest people to deal with. They tell the truth and the prices are fair. jmo
What you want to budget could determine some of this. Matching the year of your boat somewhat close would be ideal but its not always a perfect world. Find a dealer / technician you can trust to check spark, compression, and lower unit as a bare minimum. After you make your choice run good oil, keep the fuel fresh as possible and change the water impeller every couple of years. Good luck, 60-75 mercs from all those years you mentioned were pretty decent engines.
