Why do you guys put them on the console and not up front on the tm? Thinking about putting one on new boat when I buy one next month and just curious.

when the TM turns, so does yo ducer and you'd never get a good reading. You CAN install something up front where you can drop the ducer down in the water seperate from the TM though and it'll work. We've talked about this a few times and seems that SOME on here say it won;r work unless you're going 2 or 3 MPH but it will work it you get the settings right as low as 0.4 or 0.5 MPH
It will work as DD describes. There's also more reason to do it with down imaging now. The catch is, at varying speeds, like while fishing, reading what is presented will be harder. Still probably worth the effort though.
If I had the $ only for 1 quality unit, I'd be tempted to spring for an extra ducer, power etc and move it front to back. That being said, I have an SI and haven't done it.

I have SI on the Trolling Motor and on the console. The console is by far the best place for it but I have become pretty attached to the one on the TM as well. The trick to the one on the Trolling motor is to to slow the chart speed down to 1. At this setting you will get good reading at down to .5 MPH. This works great for trolling and being able to spot cover and fish off to the sides.
No doubt if I was going to have one unit it would be on the console.
On the console can u get readings while on plane?
On normal sonar mine works up to about 30 mph. SI will only work up to about 7 mph. Well for anything you can interpret anyway.
just turn of the screen speed
