I just got my tying kit from cabela's and tried tying a few jigs. I'm having trouble with getting the chenille tight aroung the collar on the jig heads. Just wondering if you guy's use the jig heads without a collar.

allot are tied without collar it is easier for me, i always seem to have problems tying collared jigs
i use the noncollared jigs.it just seems to be the correct ones for the job
I dont us a collar either.

Jigs with out a collar are easier to deal with if you are making a chenille body. If you are just going to leave a thread neck (like bucktail jigs) a smooth collar gives you a base to start with. Both have their place.....
BTW - Looks like you are trying to tie your finish knot down by the hook bend. It will be (alot) easier to start your chenille at the hook bend end, wrap your tying thread up to the head, then wrap your chenille to the head, lock it down with your thread and do your finish knot right at the lead head. This will also help to keep the chenille tight near the head. Hope that make sense..... Really no "wrong" way to do it, but this is much easier IMO. Those will catch you some fish though! :)
No Collar here except for some new little heads for kip and other hair jigs. Never use a collar with chenille. I have never used a collar for even hair jigs before this and the jig is so short I felt I needed to collar to hold the thread neck in place of confine it.
Oh and welcome to the addiction (it is one you know?) and you will most likely find out how bad it gets.

Thanks for the help guy's! I did tie off on the bottom and I'm not sure why just kinda worked out that way. I have alot to learn, but Skip, I have learned it's going to take up alot of my time. Thanks again.
Yes that is the first thing you learn, that it's not easy to get good and fast, LOL! However you will be surprised at how fast you get to making them look good enough to make you proud and once you catch a fins on one you tied it's over. Your the one hooked and there will be more and more materials you see that you want to use. It's just the hobby's way of one day you look around an say oh my goodness what have I started and about then your wife will be looking shaking her head saying something like, what next?Quote:

Here are things they don't tell your about tying jigs
No one told me, so having just started to tie I have, so far, learned:
1) When you are separating your marabou don't, repeat don't have your ceiling fan on HIGH!
2) Have your first thread wrapped on your hook shank before, repeat before you get your marabou in your hand ready to put it on!

LOL Perchjerker you too learned the hardway with the fan. Oh headbanginhillbilly don't throw your marabou trimmings in the trash can then squish the trash down to make more room in it. FEATHERS GO EVERY WHERE!!!! I use both collared and non-collared. Not to picky yet on what I use, as long as the hook is sharp. lol.
