My motor has been running fine but now it wont cut off when I turn the switch off. Sometimes it will start to sputter but sometimes it just keeps running smooth. I had to take the hood off and choke the carb down with my hand. Any ideas what might be wrong?
Outboards (2 cycle) are shut off by putting a ground on the power pack (OMC) or switch box (Merc). This is done using the black/yellow wire going to the switch. This same wire also goes to the emergency cut off and mercury switch that keeps you from starting it when the motor is tilted up. Find the black/yellow wire on your power pack and disconnect it. Put one lead of an ohm meter on the wire and the other on battery ground. With the key off you should read a direct ground and with it on an open circuit. Turn the key on/off several times and if it reads good every time then you have a bad power pack. If it doesn't read good everytime then either the ignition switch is bad or you have a bad connection going to it. If it points towards the switch/wiring look on back of the switch and you should find 2 terminals marked "M". One of them will have the black/yellow wire connected to it and the other have a black wire going to ground. Hope that makes sense.
Thanks for the help IB. I haven't tried anything yet. I noticed that fishing saturday that it did not mess up until the motor was warm. The first 2 or 3 times it killed the motor instantly and it got gradually worse after that. I ran into an outboard mechanic today and told me to try putting another ground wire to the block fromthe solenoid. But it really doesnt soung like a grounding issue or it would be more consistent, or would it?
Sounds like you have a bad wire some where in the kill switch. Make sure that the wires that go into the connectors are tight on the kill switch. Simple circuit only a couple of things it could be. I would use a DVM to check the wiring of a open or short.Check it back even to the ignition switch to see if it might be bad. If you don't have a service manual get one. It has saved me hundreds of dollars. I have rebuilt two Evinrudes 25hp and a 18hp just by following the manual and I am real not a mechanic.
