I've never done much Crappie fishing but am really interested in learning everything I can about it. I was wondering about putting YoYos out on a small lake One night this week. Do any of you ever do this or am I wasting my time?? Any Tips Appreciated...
I have probably 30 yo yos that were my grandpas. I really enjoy putting them out and sitting around a fire on the bank. If you are n the right area at the right time then you can wear em out but that is just like any other type of fishing. We always use minnows at different depths. I hadn't ran mine n along time, I mostly run jugs or trotlines for cats when I spend the night on the lake. Another thing bad about yo yos it will pull a small fish, prolly to small to clean out of the water and kill it so you wanna keep a close eye on em.
yo yo fishing is a hoot, the bad thing is where i yo yo fish at there is alot of yellow bass and white bass, they really keep you working to keep bait on them. but when the crappie start hitting them watch out, you can really rack up. and a camp fire on the bank makes for some good story telling if you are with friends. if you catch enuff crappie for a shore line fish fry, Mmmm Mmmm good.
A big ole plate of the fried slabs and taters by a camp fire is hard to beat.

That's good advise from Wish4fish and Slabsntaters. I prefer pole fishin with jigs or minnows, but when the fishing is real slow I like to put out a few. I also like letting em' sit out overnight. I usually run my trotlines pulled as tight as possible with no slack at all and the biggest minnows they sell.
What is the advantage of having so much slack in it???
And also the small minnows???
I love to yo yo fish, we like to use minnows and hook them thru the lips, we go for crappie but we catch a lot of catfish when we go, on your yo yos get some reflective tape from walmart so when u run them it will reflect a little light and they will really stick out, we set them at diffent depts, but about 6 to 12" below the trigger mech. we put a stick or something so it will not pull the fish/crappie out of the water, you dont have to worry about the catfish,
now I have a gps and I mark all of my yo yos bc they are easy to loose, and also in spring/summer dont put them under trees especially with leaves bc the snakes like to fall out of them and get in your boat (no experince on this but came close once) and you need to keep your yo yos organized, we wrap them up and then use a foam minnow bucket and put the hooks in the foam and they will lay/stack in it (dont let the yo yo lay in the bottom) and this way they will stay tangled free. and dont be surprised what you catch on yo yos I hav even cought several gar, so be prepared and there a lot of fun!
Well, we were fishin for crappie, and they were hittin small minnows, as far as the slack in the line, I could blame that on no one else but me! Good thing we set up the yoyo's right. :DQuote:

Nice fish D-Ray, did you camp? Maybe we could get a White County group together and go somewhere over a weekend. Camper and boat's always ready.

Yes we did camp at Cane Creek. It is one of the most well kept State Parks I have ever been in. The folks who work there are some of the best people I have ever run across. I dont know how the fishin' is this time of year, maybe some of the other forum members can shed some light on that, But I do look foreward to goin' back there.
