Got my quad xducer mounted and tried it out today. Everything works as advertised except for a couple of times I tried to mark a waypoint. I pushed "mark" and the unit appeared to turn itself off. If I remember right I was on dual beam view when it happened (while the unit was up front on the dual beam xducer). It marked the spot, but had to turn it back on. It happened twice. Anyone else experience anything like this?
Other than that, it's all good. It's great to have the contours available.
Talltimber - I would suspect a loose connection. Since everything else seems to be normal. Try pushing any other button except the " mark " button. If it does it with other buttons probably loose connection. If problem only occurs while pressing the " mark " button I would suspect software problem.
Also check which software version you are running. I f you don't know how to do this please advise. Either I or someone else can tell you how to do it. If an update is available it may take care of it if a software issue.
I updated the software 4.780 yesterday or the day before. When you mention you think it could be a loose connection, do mean internal to the unit, the mount, or in the wiring?
Loose connection could be anywhere . If you know anyone with similar mount I think all 700 series have similiar mounts. If problem persists in another mount known to be good then it would be internal and would have to go back to factory.
All you can control is the mount and wiring. Hopefully you have a friend with a similar unit. If this is so try placing his unit in your mount and see if the problem occurs in his unit. If it does obviously the problem likes in the wiring/ mount system.
One thing I can assure you on Humminbird has top notch customer service. If your unit does have to go back it will be fixed and back to you in a week.
Now don't laugh at me but I have a 797 and a 997 on console of boat. And a 987 on the front of my boat. So far my friends and relatives use me like a Humminbird repair and test station. 90% have proved to be a problem in mount /wiring. The other 10 % have had to go to the REAL Humminbird service station.:)
I know from my electronic tech/computer repair dude days. That cold solder joints on a printed cicuit board can drive someone trying to troubleshoot it nuts.

I've got another mount for it on the console. I plugged in my quad ducer after taking out the wide 128 ducer cable. side note: they do not use the same position and I couldn't leave it in due to the 788 having a different pin config. (maybe for the weather station, I don't know) in the 128 ducer slot. Anyhow, I didn't try to mark a spot when it was on the console. I will try that today. Thanks for the help.
Talltimber, I just got a 788 and am wondering if I should get the quad ducer. Please keep posting your experiences with it. I'm also putting mounts on console and bow, which would be best place for the quad? Thanks.
I went out again today. I marked some spots with the unit on the console mount and it's good. I guess i have a intermittent problem somewhere on the bow mount.
maj, I got the quad on the transom and a dual beam on the bow. The reason for that is that I have a 565 and they both work with the dual beam transducer. I thought if I had a problem, I could always go back to the 565. The quad on the transom is the most useful place for me, with my situation. What's not quite so handy is that, besides turning it off and moving it, you have to change the transducer-select mode back and forth from dual for the front and quad to the back.
I do most all of my "searching" at the console, throw out a buoy if I need to. What I really find useful with this rig is being able to zoom in on the map and follow a contour line. If I know there's fish along a break, then I don't really need the wide beams anyway. I basically use the quad for easing along a flat looking for shad. It picks up about twenty feet off each side. It does a good job, not a si, but a lot better than what I had. They did an even swap with me for the new dual beam that came with it.
