Cooking Powder Painted Jigs

Did my first process tonite from beginning to the end. I bought a small toaster oven for this and I'm so glad I did.:D Used pro-tec paint in fl yellow chart. Did about 60 heads. Bought a small heat gun for the initial coating and that worked much better than the bic. Hung em from the wire rack and none stuck. ;)
Now to the bad news.:( There must have been some vapors from the paint as there was a yellow chart haze where the sides of the door aren't air tight. Mama would have been upset with me had I done this in "Her" oven.:eek: Tried to wipe it off and it seems to be baked on. And some did drip, but this is a dedicated oven so no biggie. Crumb catcher pan caught it all. Just a heads up to those of you that might be doing this for the first time. Well worth the $18 to keep peace at home.

Hey SB, if you'll hang them from the hook eye with a piece of wire like a paper clip or christmas tree ornament hanger wire they will drip to the back.

How high of a temp were you cooking them at? I've been using my little oven for a couple years and haven't had any vapor problems. I cook mine @ 350*F for 20-40 min depending on how many coats of paint they have on them.

i havent ever got a haze ether but drips can be from to much paint or to hot on bakin when i use heat gun i turn on low and sit it where i dont have to hold and just pass in front 3 or 4 sec allso like said above can hang from eye or take something and make like a vise to hold them up right

Skeet from the sounds of it I have the same toaster you do... Mine has the same yellowish chartreuse around the door opening but it wasnt from the powder paint. I noticed it when I got it out of the box.

$18!?!! Ouch! You must have bought a brand spankin' new oven.

It's to late for you - but for any others thinking about buying a oven - check your local "thrift stores" - ie Salvation Army, Goodwill, etc. I found 2, they cost me a grand total of $3. Admitedly - I had to wait until they were available - had to make several trips to check for them - but a walk at noon time doesn't hurt the waistline either.....

Also - they have used kitchen tools - ie spoons, pans, muffin tins, etc - all perfectly good for using for melting down lead, pouring, etc. Don't pay retail, and the cash you spend at these types of stores helps those who need assistance.....Better than taxe$ for welfare.....

If the paint is dripping down to below you have too much paint on the jigs.

Never had any paint from vapors or anything like you described. Only had the drips at first, but never the other thing.

I just like my alcohol lamp as it's easy to control and I have the counting down with it so have not had any drips in about 4 years now. Each time I tried something other than the alcohol burner I have actually melted the lead right off the hook, LOL! Clearly too hot.

As I dipped the heated heads I learned how to get a thinner even coat without too much excess so only a few dripped. None after I thinned up the coating. It just seemed odd to have the color where it was. 20 minutes at 350. Should I maybe drop the heat to 325? Heads look great, super shiny. I held the eye with needle nose after heating so no clogged eyes. I'm probably not patient enough to hang them from the eye but I can see how that would help. Thanx all.

After reading Tackle underground and all the stuff here, the guys with toaster ovens will tell you to get an oven thermometer!!!!!!!!! When I've done them in the oven even I had a thermometer. They don't cost much but get one put it in your toaster oven and set the temp to 350 and then check to see if it comes up right.

The drips I'd attibute to too much paint, we've all had it happen. Just keep trying and get yourself that thermometer.

Very good point Fatman! I've been using one for so long now I kinda take it for granted.

They're $4 at Wally world and do make a difference, my oven can go up to 375-nearly400 on initial startup on a 350* setting.

Always preheat your oven and watch your thermo before putting your jigs in to cure.

Thanx guys, I'm goin to wally in a while and I'll pick one up. Don't want to try those multi colors and have em run or drip.
