Lowrance Guru question??

Ok. I just been using my LCX27 as a sonar. I was looking at inputing gps data to it via nmea2000 but I didn't want to buy another gps puck. I wanna use nmea output 0183 frrom Garmin of HB 997. So if I set com 1 to receive nmea 0183, will it work? Anyone tried this?

Lowrance gave me a don't know answer.

Technically, the data cable will allow Com-1 port to use the yellow wire for transmit (+) and an orange wire (+) to receive the shield wire is ground (-). Although, I am hesitant to say the LCX-27 will understand the information sent from a Garmin unit.

Tom, I've got a LCX27 too but don't use any interfaces. That appears to be plain ole RS232 type info. If the protocol is the same it may work if its in the same format. But thats what Lowrance is telling you. If you have access to a serial printer you could print the output from each and then compare it. Or just set both to the same baud rates, plug them up and see what happens. I believe send and recieve has to be swapped on one end of your cable but I can't remember for sure.

If no serial printer you could send the info to your laptop if you have a serial port on it. All you need is pins 2&3 for send/rcv and 7 for signal ground.

Man, you are really taxing my memory on this stuff.

I can put my pc in a terminal mode and see what going on I guess. I have the baud rates matched at 4800 for the Garmin. I will give it a shot.

You would think nmea 0183 was the law. But no! It is about as useless as the OBD diagnostics for cars. Sucks.

I just hope that the Lowrance unit will ignore Garmin specific sentences. I believe this is what you are saying. It sure want hurt to hook the up. Just need good weather. I got the time. :p

Yep tx/rx are crossed over. I was hoping someone had already tried this. Hateto waste money on a separate puck when I have 3 gps units with little or nothing to do.

Have you used these serial ports before?

Yeah, we used the ones on laptops all the time for communications with telephone switches (programing). It will be a 9 pin female connector on the back of your laptop. If you have an old desk top laying around it probably has one too.
