i have a $29.00 vise from bass pro and i was thinking about investing in a new vise but i dont really know how i would benifit from buying a new vise what differance is there for a el'cheap'o bass pro vice and a high end vice?
can any one help me out here ?
Do you have a rotary vice now? To me that makes a big difference with how you can look at all sides of your tie. Also helps alot for wrapping materials - Chenille, hackle, herl, etc.
If I was to get a new vice, I would want it to hold the hook sizes I tie good and rotate.... thats about it. ;)
I have 2 vises. One is a 30 year old Thompson "A" vise and one is a Renzetti rotary vise. I use the Thompson more than I do the Renzetti. For what I do now which is mostly jigs the Thom works fine . When I tie the little stuff like size #22 hooks I do use the Renzetti. Those are flies.
i got an Anvil rotery from BPS...undre hundred...it does avery thing i need...i love mine
I started with a cheapo vise which worked ok.After a couple years I decided to invest in a Renzetti full rotary vise and fell in love with it.I liked it so much that I bought another even though the original worked fine other than dropping it off the desk a few times which gave it a slight wobble.I bought the first one 13 years ago and it's still working.I own three now and can't even imagine tying with anything else.I say get a full rotary vise,you'll be glad you did.
is there any brands yall could recommend and where can i find them?
I recently bought a Danvise for $72.00 from Orvis and I love it!
Like Atticafish said, I was mainly interested in the rotary feature
as I tie a lot of chenille, and hackle, plus like to look at all sides when I tie.
I don't tie flies so I don't think the 2-300 vises would be justified. Started out
on a 9.95 Thompson and tied a lot of jigs on that puppy, but the rotary feature makes that obsolete in my opinion. I also like the smooth cam action lock on the jig.
I can get you a griffin vice at a great deal. Check there website and if you see anything that looks good to you let me know and I will get you a price. I myself tie with a Odyssey Cam Vise . Several guys here also have griffin vises including Attica fish. I believe he is happy with it,,,,right Russ :DQuote:

Well it all depends on how high end you are talking about because there are things I can do on my Nor-Vise that can't be done on a regular rotary, at least not the same way. However a good rotary is the best middle ground and like laserdoc I have the Peak which I feel is the best vise for the money you can get. made like a tank and is great machi9ng work. I have also a Renzetti that was $210 as it is and it is no better than my Peak IMHO. You can check the Peak out on my web site if you want, or just PM me.
I also forgot to say the Danvise is the best true rotary under $100, but has a lot of plastic parts and I had one my first year tying and then went to the Renzetti, but would have gone Peak if I had knows about them then, because of the money difference and the quality of the Peak. Have never head a bad word about Peak on any fly tying board or from anyone that has a Peak. So now I have 3 different Vises (sold my Danvise) and for the money I don't think you can beat a Peak.
