Is there any 'rule of thumb' as to when to use one color over another on the jig heads?
As well as willow or colorado blade on the road runner type jigs?

Well I kinf od go with the old thinking, silver when water is clear and the sun is shining and if cloudy maybe gold would be better.
If you are fishing around and through a lot of grass then maybe a willow is the one.
There is a lot more to this type thinking, but none of it is new. Do you want flash or so you want thumping of the blade? The best answer is to have different blades to try and see what the fish say.

There are very few absolutes in fishing. With all the variables tossed in as to where , when and why. One thing I have learned in 55+ years of fishing. Is that these two words rarely fit ALWAYS and NEVER.
Don't be afraid to try something new. While I firmly believe there are no " miracle " lures as seen on those stupid TV ads. There are situations where a jig color combo that normally goes untouched slays them for no particular reason.
If you read these threads you will notice how many different looking and different colors jigs are being tied. Example " Erie Dearies " a weight forward spinning bait tipped with a night crawler used to be the primary method to catch western basin walleyes. Only thing was you needed a fairly good breeze to make that blade spin as ypu drifted and casted the lure. On the rare days that a good " walleye chop " failed to show. I started to use slip bobbers and used more mobile baits such as leeches to attract attention. All the " experts " told me I was wasting my time.
As soon as I started filling my cooler and they were just watching I made a lot of converts. Then a few years later trolling " hot n tots " became the go to method when light or no wind conditions prevailed.
On the other side of the coin when I was younger and dumber. I would tell somebody if you can a fish on " THAT " ........ . Seemed like about 25% of the time boom they would do just that. Over the years I learned the correct response was " Ya never know give it a try. "
Keeping an open mind means you will never quit learning.
I try em with all different kinds of blades. YOu can always take them off and change them out if they don't work. I got a whole lot of blades from a lady on ebay who's husband worked for the old Weller company and these blades have a really deep center to them.
I still think they're kinda big on an 1/8 oz. but they make a great thump in the water. When I can dig out some of my box's I'll try and get a photo of them.
