I just learned that the 797 update, scheduled for release in the next day or two, WILL include Down Imaging and support for Lakemaster chips.
Apparently, Humminbird software engineers wrote new code for the 797 to support these features within the constraints of the unit's available memory.
So, all of you 798 owners are in the loop!

Thanks for the heads up.. i just picked up a 797 from bass pro for 500 bucks. Awesome news. They musta had this thing back there for awhile! Asked about a 997 and he said all i have is this.:)

I have a 797sci and I don't understand what this "down imaging" is all about. Can someone explain it to me???
I'm with you... I just bought a boat from another CDC member (MDuncan)... It has a 797si on the console and a 788c up front and they are Interlinked (now if I can ever get on the water and try to figure out how to use everything)! From what I understand, the complaint about the 797 was that you couldn't upgrade to down imaging (which I guess is a better view than side imaging?)... Anyhow, sounds like we will now be able to download something from HB and save it to a card, then install the upgrade on the 797 and HAVE down imaging - which I guess is a really good thing... Please help people : )

Enjoy it. I bought a Lowrance HDS5 for the new boat, and a plain jane LMS640 for the trolling motor. Will most likely buy the Structure scan in a couple months, If I feel like I need it.
