Ok since there are no ducks in our fields or on the river up here my buddies and I have decided to give winter fishing a try. But before we go out and freeze our butts off trying to jig some crappie into the boat we were wondering if anyone had some pointers that we could use to increase our odds. Thanks

Sorry man I am not much of a crappie fisherman, I'm trying to learn so I have no pointers. I did come from Maumele to Mayflower today and the bean fields off of the interstate were loaded with green heads. With all the water up north being froze I thought there would b abunch of ducks for ya'll to shoot at.
My thoughts would be with this type weather shad will die in millions making for a tough bite.They want be looking for a big meal but maybe a small snack,down size jig or maybe small minners in pinkest color fished dead sticking.
It's pretty simple actually, some lakes produce well in the winter time some dont! I personally have spent many days in this type weathet(20 degrees and under) and have done quite well. Just look for multiple boats in the deepest water of the lake,typically around spillways.

I visit yearly mid-Feb to mid-Mar and fish crappie/gills etc. fishing the same way as I do in warm weather. Start shallow fishing cover and work out deeper (channels) until they are located. I don't see any difference.
