New kid on the block

I have crappie and bass fished all my life but have never tyed a jig and I have fought hard resisting the urge but I keep coming to this site. I can't get it off my mind. I was surprised at what those little vises cost but I learned long ago that sorry tools can disgust you in a hurry. Besides the better vise will sell for better money and faster If I see that tying is not for me, so its not like your loseing all that cash. For health reasons I am selling all my woodworking tools and exotic woods to finance my new venture. (any of you vise dealers need some wood tools? he hee) I think I have read every post on here concerning vises and I am sure that I will go with a rotory griffin, peak or the danvise looks interesting and it would allow more money for a few tools. I am thinking I just want to start off with two or three styles I like and in maybe 4 or 5 of the most effective colors here in central Arkansas. Anyway, I will be hanging around hoping I can pick up a few tips from the pros. Any advise is always welcome........Ray

The only thing I would say about the Danvise is that it is probably the best true rotary under $100, but it does have a lot of plastic parts so maybe you should try to see one on person first if there is a place near you. I had and used one for a year and can't say too much bad other than I tended to over tighten the plastic tension screw and the whole jaw is a bit on the big side and the jaw is about the only part not plastic. However I sold mine when I got a new one so you may well be able to do the same thing with one, but don't know that for sure.

RTARK, welcome from south La. near the Gulf. Tying jigs can be a addictive as wood working. What kind of wood working you did? I'm into turning square wood into sawdust and round things, better known as pen turning. I lost use of my shop for hurricane Gustav but I'm looking forward to getting things going again soon.

You don't happen to turn spinning reel seats with your exotics do you? If so would you be interested in trading seats for fly tying tools/materials or jigs?

Hey, I made entertainment centers, raised panel doors Grandfather clocks etc. I am very familiar with so. La. and I can almost hear your cajun accent in your typing. I have a small piece of pink ivory wood that would make great pen blanks. It is very rare , very expensive. Google it and If you would like to have it maybe we do some kind of trade for jig supplies. I also have lots of bocote, rosewood , purple heart and bloodwood. If your interested PM me. I'll even give you some of it for postage only. Its all got to go.

I wish I did. I would do some trading with you. I can trade you the wood, then all you have to do is turn it. I used to make finger grooved handles for bass sticks but never for a spinning rod. For years I made handmade hunting knifes with exotic handles. My old friend the famous Jimmy Lile got me into that. Just yesterday I put a lot of the wood on ebay.
