Here's my attempt to match as closely as possible the size/shape/color of the "good" minnows the local bait shop sells. He usually has just creek chubs, but occasionaly he gets some in that he calls Minnesota Shiners (doubt thats right) but they do work much better than the chubs. Think I came pretty close.... 1/32 darter - craft hair & buck tail, white/gray/black - holograph tinsel

The 2nd one I'm not too impressed with and having some trouble. Have cut down 3 attempts before this one, proly end up cutting this one too. :( This is sorta the same idea (shape) as my shad swap jig I'm doing, but I'm trying to come up with a baby bluegill color pattern. Anyone have any jigs (or ideas) that look like baby bluegill they wanna share?

I like them both. Just send me the second one before you cut it. First one would make a good shad or minnow imitation.

they look good but i cant give you no help on the whole bluegill thing but once you get it down i would like to see how it turns out but have you ever looked at using magic tails? they look great for tying minnow patterns...here is a link to them...but i got mine at cabelas for $0.88 a 10 pack

I've looked at them in my Jann's catalog, but never tried them. May have to try them. Do you use fabric markers on them to color like they have shown?

In the tail I used olive and natural zonkers along with drk. green, black & yellow marabou.


EDIT - Nevermind about the coloring, yep permanent markers.... I went back and actually read the description instead of just looking at the picts. :o Always new those reading skills would come in handy someday..... :p

You cut that second one you need your head examined. Looks good to me. Quit being the judge and let the fish decide. Real good minnow pattern, waiting on my bucktails to arrive so I can branch out a bit with them. Good lookin chenille on the second IMHRO.(in my humble rookie opinion)

i dont use markers on the magic tails as them seem to bleed and make a mess...i use a tooth pic and fabric paint...they have very good movment...i just need to find a way to make the body match they head and tail...need like lil side fins...might try to make some sticking out of the chenille with some clear krystal flash...just hate spending more then 3-4 mins tying one jig...but i might tie one up tomorrow with the magic tail if i can find them and ill post a pic of it

Your first jig....the "Minnesota Shiner" is a winner for sure!
In fact that's one of ther best replicas of shiners I've seen!
You've got a winner there Attica! The bluegill.....not so much.
I think the chenille needs to be darker.....greenish, blueish, blackish,
whatever color that is:confused:
On the shiner.....did you use dubbing or build it up with thread?

Probably more like a lobotomy. :rolleyes: I guess I just go nuts cause I can make a minnow that looks like a minnow, but can't get the gill jig to look like a bluegill.

NP64 - The chenille is twisted olive medium & yellow ultra. I also put a piece of ultra yellow on the belly and ultra black on the back over the body from tail to head.

CK3 - The shiner body is just white thread that I used a marker to make the back darker (learned from Hays47) and then coated the thread body with some sparkle nail polish (learned from LedHed). Pup got me started with the craft hair so could have never made this without c.c member tricks. ;)

Bluegill chenille.... yeah, we need someone to come up with a custom designed mix of all those colors plus some yellow in there too. Just can't twist that many colors together. :confused:
