A lot of your settings depend on your lake conditions and where you have your transducer mounted. Is your lake very murky and full of trash (leaves, logs etc..)? Is your transducer in the hull of your boat or mounted outside the hull?
I have the same unit and it was very difficult to get these settings where I wanted them. I tweeked and fine tuned for quite some time. Eventually, I got it to where I liked them and now it works pretty good in most any fresh water lake I go to. Muddy, murky or clear.... it seems to not have much influence on the unit.
The unit is amazing. I use the Sonar to hover over crappie condo's or other brush I find with the Sonar.
I love the GPS and graph most of all. If I find a structure I wish to save, it's a snap to do on the Sonar and then I go back and find it on the graph. Other times, I run the split screen and find it on both.
It is at first difficult to fine tune, but don't give up... it's worth it once you familiarize yourself with the unit.
Thanks for the info. I had an LMS 522 and after about two weekes it stopped working because it was full of water... I got a brand new one from the dealer had it for about a month and a half and finally got the settings right and bang the same thing happened so Lowrance upgraded me to an HDS5... it only took 5 and a half months!!!:eek: So now I'm starting at scratch again... I do a lot of trolling so I use the split screen so I can see my speed at all times.

I like to drop a little jig near the bottom under the transducer and adjust the sensitivity until I can see it.
Turn off the auto sensitivity and go to manual sensitivity setting and adjust the sensitivity to 74% and then adjust the colorline to 84%, this is the setting that POfisher and i both now use.
You can add speed, temp, time, date, depth ect...to any screen on a HDS unit by using the data overlay feature and you wont need split screens to see speed while on the sonar page because it will then be there. :D
