Do I want the internal or add on GPS (with the puck over the transducer)?
Seems like a trivial question, but it seems like the external over the transducer would be better for marking structure.

Exactly. Also, pucks do go bad so the external would be replaceable without sending the unit back. Having said that, I have 2 internal and 1 external. I've had not trouble from any of them and one internal is 4 years old.
I would let the installation be your guide. If you don't mind installing the external go for it.
Wannabe...
I have a fiberglass boat and also went with the external mount for servicing purposes. I pulled out one of my cupholders and ran the wires thru it and mounted the puck to the cupholder very clean look.
Puck it. You will be better off in the long run.
Internal. One less wire and object to screw with. Then when you decide to move it up front or around, you don't have to buy another puck. I wish my 997 had the Internal.
Unless you will be flush mounting it or have some obstructioin in the way, I like internal. Like Forrest said "That's good....one less thing".
Dayton
Just bought one myself and had the same question. I was thinking the same thing about having less wires and being quicker to install. The salesman (who said he has had a new SI every year since they came out) said to go with the external for better accruacy. He had some problems at first and Hbird adivsed this. I wanted the internal but went with his advice.
Puck it.......:)
