Ive got an old chest type freezer that doesnt work anymore and i was thinking about how to convert it to a minnow vat. Im looking for input or ideas on the best way to go about this. I will be using city water so what type of water filters do i need and how much aeration is necessary, also how often to change the water and filter out the amonia. Im clueless but interested.
what we used to do as a kid and had gold fish. We'd fill up a big vat full of tap water and let it sit for a few days, the clorine would evaporate by then and we could change the water out. I WAS gonna buy a 55 gallon drum and aerator form a certain member on this board and told him I wanted it but he ain't said another word about it. HINT HINT
I was told that fish produce ammonia then they breathe and that has got to be filtered out.
I put the one's I've had left the last 3 trips in my little pond out back and they're still alive. Guess I have about 100 or so now, maybe 125 at the most in a 4 foot by 2 foot plastic pond

Bigger, your minnows will last longer if you fill it with Perrier or Avion. ANy high end bottled water will do. Also the larger more discriminating crappie will bite those minners quicker.
If you spike it with a little moonshine, the minnows will attack the crappie
and choke them to death for you :p
Really, I kept some last winter in a old freezer here at the shop.
All I had was a little aquarium air pump hooked to about a 12"
bubble bar. That's it. As long as it stayed fairly cool, I'd only lose two
or three a day usually. The poo did get pretty bad by Springtime so this
year I rigged up a filter that is working pretty good though it's a throw-
together. I got a 110 to 12V converter running a 360 gph livewell pump,
shooting it over into the top of a five gallon bucket hung in the side of
the tank with a central unit air filter squashed down into the bucket.
Took a hole saw and cut holes in the sides of the bucket up near the top,
water passes through the filter then overflows out through these holes.
Don't have to run it all the time, just an hour or so every few days.
DD, we talked on the phone and I guess we never had a meeting of the minds. You said you wanted it, much like 13 other peeps but never pulled the trigger.
