Old Hickory Crappie 10-11-09

Hey fellas been a while... went both Sat-10th and Sun-11th, and found alot of small crappie not keepable but was able to boat 5 nice slabs on Sunday. I caught most of the the small crappie in 13ft or less... but moved out on Sunday morning to a depth of no less than 16ft and picked up the bigger crappie hanging around rock ledges but they were still tight lipped and not feeding heavy just yet. Water temp was in the mid 60's...I look for the bite to get better and the water continues to cool closer to mid 50's.

Nice fish. And your spot on with the temps. Bigger fish will hit better when it cools some. But this darned rain and wind and cold fronts keeping them tough to catch! Good job!!

thanks fellas... this past weekend was the first time since early June that i looked for the slabs, during the summer i put on the waders and trout fish at the caney-fork and i just love the mountains and the clean air and of course the thick fog on the river makes it special. i believe that i could have caught more because i had them pinned down and marked w bouies and all of a sudden a sailboat twice the size of my boat just sailed right through in between my two markers and scared the crap out of me and scattered the crappie all to h3ll that were under my boat and in that area. yes west tn crappie all these funky weather patterns and rain are not helping us out at all and the water temp moving all over the place is keeping the slabs at bay. but not for long, we need the mid 50's or so and it is on for sure.i hope everyone has a safe fall fishing season and able to stock the ice box full.
